Hillside Switchback Trail
Project Overview
Steep terrain choked with dense brush and fallen trees made this hillside completely impassable. We graded a switchback trail that turns rocky outcroppings into scenic features, with a clean mulched surface safe for all ages.
The Challenge
The hillside had a 120-foot elevation gain with slopes exceeding 35 degrees in places. Dense brush and fallen trees made it impossible to even assess the terrain, let alone build a trail. Traditional equipment could not safely operate on the steep grade.
Our Solution
Our remote-controlled mulcher was deployed for the steepest sections, operating safely on grades that would be dangerous for manned equipment. We designed switchbacks that follow the natural contours, incorporating rocky outcroppings as scenic rest points rather than obstacles to remove.
The Result
A safe, accessible 0.5-mile switchback trail that turns challenging terrain into an enjoyable hiking experience. The trail is suitable for all ages and fitness levels thanks to the gradual grade of the switchbacks. Rocky outcroppings serve as natural benches with views of the surrounding woodland.
