Clearing Land in Naples

Naples is a lake town. Its shoreland ordinance names seven great ponds in Naples: Long Lake, Brandy Pond, Sebago Lake, Trickey Pond, Peabody Pond, Cold Rain Pond and Holt Pond. The Songo River and the Crooked River are part of its waters too. The 1,400-acre Sebago Lake State Park, which opened to the public in 1938, has its campground in Naples and runs the historic Songo Lock.

Around lakes like these, the jobs that fit forestry mulching are clearing an overgrown lot set back from the shore, cutting a trail through the woods, and careful brush work closer to the water within what the town permits. The machine grinds brush and small trees where they stand and leaves the mulch on the ground, so there are no brush piles to haul away.

The Rules Where You Live

Naples' shoreland zone reaches 250 feet from great ponds, rivers and freshwater wetlands, and 75 feet from streams. In each of the town's shoreland districts, clearing or removing vegetation (other than timber harvesting) needs a permit from the Code Enforcement Officer. Near the water, these limits apply:

  • A buffer of 100 feet along great ponds and the rivers that flow to them, and 75 feet along other waters and tributary streams.
  • Inside the buffer, no opening in the canopy can exceed 250 square feet, no more than 40% of the volume of trees 4 inches and larger can be cut in any ten years, and plants under three feet tall can't be cut or removed.
  • On the shoreland part of a lot, the total of all cleared openings is capped at 25% of that area or 10,000 square feet, whichever is greater.
  • In a Resource Protection District on a great pond, no cutting within 75 feet of the water except to remove safety hazard trees.

Sebago Lake drinking water

Naples shares Sebago Lake, which supplies drinking water to nearly a sixth of Maine's population. The Portland Water District is allowed to leave it unfiltered, under a waiver tied to the lake's exceptional water quality and the district's watershed protection program. For Sebago shorefront owners, its Lakescaping program offers free consultations and matching grants of up to $1,500.

With a permit needed for clearing in every shoreland district, the Code Enforcement Officer is the first call, and we confirm with the town what applies before work near water. This is general information, not legal advice.

Who to Call in Naples

Naples Questions

Do I need a permit to clear brush near Long Lake or Brandy Pond?

Yes, if the work is in the shoreland zone, which reaches 250 feet from great ponds like Long Lake and Brandy Pond. Naples requires a Code Enforcement Officer permit to clear or remove vegetation in every one of its shoreland districts. Talk to the code office before any cutting near the shore, and plan for the permit before work starts.

How much can I thin to see the lake?

Some, inside firm limits. Within the 100-foot buffer along a great pond, Naples allows no canopy opening over 250 square feet, and no more than 40% of the volume of trees 4 inches and larger can be cut in any ten years. Plants under three feet tall stay. Selective thinning with the town's permit is the way to open a view without clearing the shore.

Is there help for lakefront owners in Naples?

Yes. The Lakes Environmental Association is the LakeSmart hub for Naples, and LakeSmart is free, non-regulatory and voluntary, with individualized suggestions for keeping stormwater pollution out of the lake. On Sebago Lake, the Portland Water District's Lakescaping program adds free consultations and matching grants of up to $1,500 for shorefront owners.

How We Work

  • One machine, no hauling. The mulcher grinds brush and small trees into mulch that stays on site as ground cover.
  • Erosion control planned in. Near water and on slopes, we plan around Maine's erosion and sedimentation control practices and confirm the local rules before work begins.
  • A remote-controlled mulcher for steep slopes and sensitive spots, so the operator can work from a distance.
